2 GB RAM is the minimum required for OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) to the latest, OS X 10.11, however at least 4 GB RAM tends to be advised, especially if you are using more demanding apps. All though the early 2009 Mini will run more recent iterations of OS X, I have not bothered installing them. For one, until recently my internet service was very slow and unreliable.
